Summer Research

While you’re studying at Centre College, you may interested in participating in an internship or participating in summer research. Some members of the faculty spend their summers collaborating with students on research projects. Information for opportunities on campus with math professors will be sent out in the spring semester to the Math Enthusiasts mailing list (email prayat.poudel@centre.edu to be added).

Students may also be interested in applying for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) sponsored by the NSF.

PAST ON-CAMPUS SUMMER RESEARCH

In past years, students have presented their findings from their summer work at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings. In recent years, two of our students, Cate Heine (2018) and Change He (2016) have been awarded the Outstanding Presentation Awards at the 2018 and 2016 Joints Mathematics Meetings respectively.

Dr. Neidmann

This research extends Dr. Neidmann’s research in experimental pure mathematics. The research links number theory and graph theory, and studies how the structure of infinite graphs on the integers can lead to results about non-standard digital representations of numbers. This summer, Pierce and Ngoc applied the idea of natural exact covering systems (NECS) to these types of graphs, and discovered how the structure of these graphs changes when we “split” the rules in a certain way. We are currently writing a paper summarizing our results.
