Major Requirements

Our mathematics major begins by establishing a firm foundation in calculus and linear algebra in the student’s first two years. Majors are then exposed to a broad range of courses which include both the more theoretical studies of algebra, real analysis, and complex analysis and the more applicable studies of probability, statistics, and numerical analysis. This solid core of basic mathematics is strengthened by special topics courses, which are often a product of joint student-faculty interest (check out Special Topic Courses).

Centre’s math majors are among the best and brightest students at Centre and in the nation. Recent majors have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships and Fulbright Scholarships for international study. We have majors that have gone on to graduate work in mathematics, mathematical biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, engineering, materials science, medicine, and physics. The majority of our majors have established rewarding and satisfying careers in fields ranging from finance to teaching, from computer programming to law, from medicine to architecture, from actuarial sciences to government.

Many of our majors choose to double-major in other areas. Recently, students have completed a double major in math together with such fields as Computer Science, Drama, Economics, History, Music, Physics, and Spanish. There is a great deal of flexibility in the scheduling of a math major and it is compatible with essentially every other major program of study at Centre.
