Frank L. Rainey was born on July 25, 1867, in Lafayette, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University in 1889. He was a professor of biology at Miami University in 1897 and 1898 and taught at Rush Medical College in 1898 and 1899. He was at Michigan Military Academy from 1900 to 1903 and Parsons College from 1905 to 1908. In 1908 Rainey came to Centre College as a professor of biology, and in 1924 was made Registrar of the college. In 1928 he was elected to the position of dean of the college. In June of 1936, he was appointed Acting President, a position he held until his death on October 2, 1936. A tribute in the 1937 yearbook described Rainey with these words: “As a teacher, he was exacting in the requirements he made upon his students but was also sympathetic and understanding in his dealings with them.” Rainey was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Genetic Association and the American Eugenics Research Association.
