Adding Questions to a Quiz

Quiz: Adding Questions to a Quiz

Step 2 – Finish creating a quiz by adding questions to the quiz.

1. If you are sitting at this screen, you are ready to go:

If not, click on the quiz that you created earlier on your course page.  Until now, this quiz  has only had basic settings, such as availability dates, feedback and score preferences, and a name.

2. Click Edit Quiz.

3. Click the Add drop down button to select a question source.

Here we have three options:

Adding a new question
  1. Select A new question from the Add drop down menu.
  2. A selection window with question types will pop up. Select your question type from the list. For specific instructions on Multiple Choice questions, Click Here.

Each question type has specific requirements to setup the question for information on several of the more common ones click the links below:

3. Continue adding questions until you have completed your quiz.

4. Now you need to set the point value for each question and the maximum grade. (the default is 1 pt per question and 10.00 maximum grade)

    • To change question point values, click the pencil icon to edit, type in new value, then hit Enter on your keyboard to save.
    • To change Maximum grade value, click into the box, type in new value.
    • Click Save to save new values.

Please NOTE: If individual question point values do not add up to the Maximum grade, Moodle will use Natural weighting to derive a weighted grade. (i.e. Max =10, individual questions = 1, 1, 1, 1) Moodle calculates 1+1+1+1 /10

Moodle will do the calculations and apply the percentage earned to the total quiz value. Example: You have 4 questions worth 1 pt. each, but you want the quiz to equal 10 pts.

5. To rearrange the order of the questions in your quiz, use the cross marks to drag and drop the question to the correct location.

6. To edit, preview, or delete questions, from your existing quiz, use the icons on the Editing quiz page.

Reminder that the new version of the Quiz module now allows versioning. If you edit an existing quiz question, it will create a new version of the question rather than deleting the original.

7. When you are finished, return to the main course page.

5. To edit existing questions:

    • If you want to change how the questions appear to the students, click the arrows on the left (to place questions on separate pages or the same page).
    • You can change the point value for each question by changing the numerical value next to each question.
    • Use the cross marks to reorder questions.
